Thank you for this post. It is helping me to reflect. Particularly, I am reflecting on the idea of cultivation of strength (and I may add, on cultivation of virtue). I am currently reading Walden, by Henry David Thoreau, who discusses this concept at some length throughout his book. I wonder who in American history would have trained in HRD if it were available then.

Many thanks for this, very true. We live in an age where people expect
too much because we have too much and have forgotten how to
strive. Well this is a fact in the West where people can afford to eat,
and live from day to day – they are lucky. Society needs to balance itself
generally, in particular UK and I think martial arts will always offer a person
this balance if, in fact, the practitioner is a martial artist and lives
by the code, as many are just preoccupied with wealth and fame and fighting
that is not the true ‘way’. Being a martial artist permeates the whole of
one’s life whether we make the right decisions or not, we should learn
from our experiences in any case and not be afraid to admit that we
are always growing.
